There have been many questions about the Rethinking Equity and Teaching for English Language Learners initiative and Sheltered English Immersion Endorsement courses since the launch of the initiative in 2012. The MTA has created a series of Q&A’s and advisories to explain the requirements for Massachusetts teachers and districts. CLICK http://massteacher.org//ell for more information.
Based on data from last school year, the DESE recently sent a letter by registered mail to core academic teachers (CATs) who were assigned ELLs during their district’s cohort training window, but have NOT yet obtained the SEI Endorsement or enrolled in an SEI Endorsement course.
Since updated information for this school year will not be available until after the spring SEI Endorsement course registration deadline of Jan.15, the DESE will NOT have information for those CATs who were assigned ELLs for the first time during this school year.
